To help you get more acquainted with this new show, we’ve broken it down into five brilliant reasons why you should definitely make Renegade Nell your next must-watch, starting with…

Louisa Harland

Ireland’s own Louisa Harland is front-and-centre for this new Disney+ show, playing Renegade Nell herself.

We know Harland best for portraying the in-her-own-world Orla McCool from Derry Girls, but here she is playing a very, VERY different type of character.

Quick to anger, handy in a fight, but with a huge heart filled with love for her family, and with a special connection to the magical side of the world, Harland is fantastic as the heroine at the heart of this fantastical journey.

The supporting cast

Of course, Harland isn’t alone in the new show, as she is joined by an incredible cast of supporting characters.

Other big names to keep an eye out for...

Golden Globe nominee Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck, 101 Dalmatians) plays Lady Eularia Moggerhanger, a local newspaper magnate who gets caught up in the stories around the Renegade Nell.

Adrian Lester (The Day After Tomorrow, Mary Queen of Scots) portrays the Earl of Poynton, an aristocrat with some unsettling links to the supernatural.

Emmy-nominated Nick Mohammad (Ted Lasso, The Martian) stars as Billy Blind, a sort of magical fairy with a specific link to Nell.

And they are just the tip of the talented iceberg!

Sally Wainright

Behind the scenes is just as stacked as in front, as Renegade Nell comes from none other than Sally Wainright. The creator and writer of this new series, Wainright has been nominated for no less than ten BAFTAs in her career to date and has taken that award home four times.

Wainright is the mind behind great shows like Last Tango In Halifax, Scott & Bailey, Gentleman Jack, as well as Happy Valley, quite literally one of the very best shows of the 21st century so far.

All eyes were on what Wainright would choose to do as the follow-up to that incredible series, which is why fans of great storytelling are even more psyched to check out Renegade Nell.

The unique plot

Set in 18th century England, Nell Jackson returns home to her family after years away, leaving her younger sisters and widowed father believing she had died. Her shocking return coincides with the plans of torment put in place by Thomas Blancheford (played with evil relish by Jake Dunn), who is on the verge of taking over the town that the Jackson family all live in.

Through a series of terrible events, Nell soon finds herself on the run, having been framed for a murder she didn’t commit. Hitting the road with her younger sisters, Nell is forced to become a highwayman in order to provide for them.

As her reputation builds, Nell becomes the most feared highwaywoman in the entire country… but she is also backed by Billy Blind, a magical creature who has sworn to protect her life at all costs.

And so Renegade Nell travels around England, constantly attempting to prove her innocence, unaware that the path she has taken will unravel secrets that go all the way up to the Queen herself…

The incredible action

Right from the opening scene, you’ll be hugely impressed by the visually stunning and properly gritty action set pieces. When Nell teams up with Billy, their combined powers trigger a mix of Neo from The Matrix and Steve Rogers from Captain America.

So we get these incredible fight scenes with Renegade Nell at the centre, seemingly capable of slowing time down to such a rate that she can dodge bullets or, if she’s really showing off, catching them in mid-air.

And that is before she wades in with kicks and punches and impossible physical feats that will have the entire family watching at home cheering along.
